Chapter 1: Preface

Prout Village is a social system that replaces capitalism and socialism, a system where money does not exist. It is also a sustainable society.

Wars, poverty, environmental destruction, climate change, infectious diseases—many social problems continue to occur worldwide. When considering solutions one by one, the realization of a peaceful society seems far away. However, if we notice a certain fundamental point that underlies all these problems, the solution actually appears simple. That fundamental cause is the "system of money," and all social problems are directly or indirectly related to money.

For that reason, humans need to rethink their way of living. This means considering why we live and how we must live. While nature and science technology are necessary for human life, here we summarize what kind of society Prout Village is. To put it simply, the world will become as follows:

In each region of the world, the basic unit will be a municipality called Prout Village, with about 55,000 residents and a diameter of 5.5 km. All food, electricity, housing, home appliances, and daily necessities will be produced from local resources by local residents, and thus everyone can enjoy them free of charge. Housing will be built as natural-material straw bale houses designed to be returned to nature. These houses use natural materials such as straw, fast-growing paulownia, bamboo, stone, and soil. They are highly airtight and highly insulated, providing heating and cooling all day long. Everyone will be able to rent these houses free of charge from the municipality.

Most electric appliances will be manufactured without fossil resources or rare metals, eliminating resource depletion problems. However, instead of using high-tech technology, Mid-tech (a middle ground between high-tech and low-tech/manual work) will be the main approach. Daily necessities will be produced within locally gathered raw materials and obtained free of charge. Production quantity will be limited to the number of residents, and products will be designed for reuse, minimizing raw material harvesting and eliminating environmental destruction.

All wastewater from households will be allowed to permeate into the ground adjacent to the house. Therefore, detergents, soaps, and shampoos without chemical substances will be used. This will prevent pollution of the oceans and rivers, restoring them to their original clear state.

Electric power is basically generated using pendulum-type tidal current generators in seas and rivers and magnesium batteries, combined with various other power generation technologies. Small-scale wind power generation is also combined into this system. Thus, electricity is produced in many places throughout the seas and municipalities, diversifying power sources and increasing the total amount. Since this is not a monetary society, massive amounts of electricity are no longer necessary.

Food is produced through self-sufficiency by natural farming on farmland provided to each household without the use of pesticides, relying on the power of nature. This eliminates soil contamination and also removes residents falling into poverty.

Local forests are managed by municipalities, distinguishing between trees to be preserved for life and those for logging, and conducting planned reforestation. This ensures municipalities with abundant nature are maintained worldwide.

Education as found in monetary societies, such as schools, disappears. In Prout Village, everyone from children to adults engages in what they like, either individually or in groups. In other words, these groups or circles become the basic units, and children and adults select and participate in what they like, much like choosing a cram school, or conduct their own activities independently. From early childhood, everyone takes personal responsibility to engage in things they are curious about.

There are no jobs requiring work from morning till night; residents work only when there are public works, which amount to a few hours per week. At other times, they spend time doing what they enjoy. Schools, companies, environmental destruction, pollution, waste, money, taxes, and poverty all disappear. There is no pension system; since food and housing are self-produced, everyone can live without hardship for life.

If a natural disaster destroys a municipality, reconstruction is carried out using local resources, so no funds are required, and there is no need to worry about whether the post-reconstruction economy will function well. What is needed is manpower and local resources, and since people have free time, reconstruction proceeds rapidly.

Countries composed of such municipalities increase, respecting culture and diversity, and it becomes possible to travel freely between countries without passports. The main means of transport are automobiles running at 20 km/h within municipalities, and electric trains for mid-to-long-distance travel between municipalities—all powered by electricity.

Life in Prout Village involves no jobs demanding speed, and since everyone lives at a relaxed pace, safe driving takes absolute priority over speed on the ground. Also, since the radius from the edge to the center of a municipality is 2.75 km, it takes only nine minutes to reach the center driving at 20 km/h. For long-distance trips, people use trains and then rent cars in the destination municipality to reach their final goal. These measures aim to achieve zero traffic accidents and zero fatalities resulting from them.

The world connected in this way is governed by a single organization called the World Federation (World Parliament), where representatives from each Country (National Parliament) gather. Borders disappear, poverty vanishes, and there is no reason for wars motivated by money or resources. Free movement around the world promotes active cultural exchange among ethnic groups.

This is a sustainable society where human abilities are maximized, and money does not exist. In capitalist societies, people must work long hours daily until retirement to earn money. However, by shifting to a society centered on local communities producing only what their residents need, minimal public works and resource gathering suffice.

By creating Prout Village, environmental destruction and social problems seen worldwide on land, sea, and air will disappear. However, a different issue remains for humans. Human life includes suffering such as anger, regret, anxiety, jealousy, and inferiority complex, all caused by human Ego. This Ego is the thinking mind, and thinking generates suffering. When this thinking is quieted and one reaches a state of No-mind, suffering eases. This is possible by concentrating consciousness on a single point. Through continued practice, No-mind becomes habitual, creating a peaceful life. In other words, Prout Village also addresses the human mind.

Monetary societies contain various social problems. The following table shows examples of these and their solutions in Prout Village.

Social Problems and Their Connection to Money

Category

Social Problem

Connection with Money (Cause/Background)

Prout Village Solution

Environment & Resources

Resource Depletion

Companies must keep generating profits, thus continuously consuming raw materials. Employees work to earn a living despite knowing it causes environmental destruction and waste.

Solved by eliminating fossil fuels and rare metals use; based on recycling.

Deforestation

Trees are cut down to gain profit from selling wood.

No profit-driven logging because no monetary society exists.

Destruction of Marine Ecosystems

Fishermen continue fishing to make a living (legal or illegal).

Profit-driven overfishing disappears.

Waste Problem

Excessive packaging is used to make products appear sellable, increasing waste (sales-oriented). Non-burnable waste is sent to landfills.

No production of goods solely for sales.

Plastic Waste Problem

Dependence on cheap, easy-to-process plastic allows companies to provide many durable products cheaply, but non-biodegradable waste flows into oceans, causing fish to ingest it and humans to consume contaminated fish, creating a vicious cycle.

Products are redesigned and made without plastic.

Inventory Disposal

Overproduction for profit leads to surplus stock being discarded.

No companies exist in a monetary society, so this does not occur.

Climate Change / Global Warming

Economic activity increases CO₂ emissions.

No companies or economic activities, so CO₂ emissions drastically decrease.

Excessive Transportation (Truck Overuse)

Competition among companies, same-day delivery, customer satisfaction, and mass distribution lead to congested logistics and increased CO₂ emissions.

No profit-driven transport.

Overconsumption (Advertising and Trends Stimulate Consumption)

Advertising, media, and SNS stimulate consumer desire, making people buy unnecessary things to increase profit.

No monetary society, so no need to sell.

Decrease in Wildlife Populations / Increase in Extinct Species

Habitat development (farmland, housing, roads), overhunting, tourism, and commercial use (fur, pets, medicine, souvenirs) generate profit; human economic activities displace animal habitats, threatening species survival.

No monetary society, so animals are not exploited for profit.

Labor & Economy

Long Working Hours

Employees must work overtime if ordered to maintain their livelihood through wages.

No companies exist in monetary society.

Income Inequality

Differences in earning ability and opportunity directly translate into disparity via market principles.

No money exists, so no income inequality.

Homelessness

Loss of housing and livelihood due to financial hardship.

Everyone enjoys free housing and food via self-sufficiency; no homelessness.

Declining Birthrate / Population Decrease

Concern about national interests and economic power decline due to labor force reduction.

No economic competition, so declining birthrate and national decline are not problems.

Pension System Collapse

Benefit reductions and system unsustainability due to funding shortages.

Self-sufficient society with freedom of movement; survival without pensions possible.

Education & Inequality

Educational Disparity

Educational opportunities depend on family economic status; tuition, cram school fees, and private school admission vary greatly by income.

Concepts of employment, promotion, and salary do not exist.

Medical & Health

Healthcare Access Inequality

Income causes avoidance of treatment or interruption, making early treatment and prevention difficult.

Municipal system provides free medical care by qualified personnel and trains future doctors.

Crime & Corruption

Political Corruption

Corruption caused by monetary incentives like high salaries, vested interests, and bribes.

No money reduces corruption likelihood; Nomination Election selects virtuous leaders ensuring fair governance.

Theft & Drug Sales

Difficult to eradicate because of monetary gain from illegal means.

No monetary society eliminates the need to earn money illegally.

Child Prostitution & Human Trafficking

Extreme poverty and family collapse lead children or guardians to participate for money; intermediaries profit highly, commercializing the practice.

No monetary society removes the need to earn money this way.

Bullying

Happens in places where people must spend significant time together (school, workplace), tied to money (evaluation, advancement, livelihood), creating pressure.

No long hours spent together in schools or workplaces, so bullying rarely occurs.

Online Slander

For companies, slander and flaming attract access and ad revenue, creating a financially profitable structure for incitement.

Scarcity of rare metals leads to no personal use of smartphones or internet.

Mental Health

Loneliness, Isolation, Suicide

Many cases caused by economic hardship, unemployment, and multiple debts; support systems require funding.

No money needed for living; no stress from school or work.

Disaster & Health

Recovery from Natural Disasters

Enormous funds required to rebuild towns.

Reconstruction possible with local resources and manpower.

Infectious Disease Spread

People must interact to work and earn wages.

Even if municipalities close to prevent spread, everyone can live without trouble.

International Relations

International Conflicts

Economic competition over national interests and resource acquisition causes disputes.

No monetary society removes the need for countries to earn money.

Immigration & Refugee Issues

Mass movements due to conflict, economic disparity, and sea-level rise cause social friction and acceptance difficulties.

Free housing and food self-sufficiency allow free relocation and support.

Poverty & Slums

People unable to maintain minimum living standards cluster in slums, causing cycles of violence, disease, and child labor.

Self-sufficiency ensures everyone enjoys free housing and food.

Many people around the world have considered solutions. However, the number of social problems has not decreased but rather piled up. The fundamental cause of all this is that the monetary society, which relies on money for living, is inherently flawed. Unless this part is changed, these problems will never disappear. Prout Village is the solution to all these social problems.
